Curator's Take
“An unofficial sequel (there were many) trying to cash in on the Van Cleef hit. It’s cheaper and sleazier, but has that grindhouse charm. Good for a midnight movie marathon.”
Why This Movie Is Important
An important example of the 'mockbuster' phenomenon in Italian cinema. By appropriating the 'Sabata' name, it shows how valuable brand recognition was. These unofficial sequels created a chaotic shared universe where character names were merely marketing labels, a unique quirk of the European distribution system.
Production Details
Sabata the Killer is a 1970 western film directed by Tulio Demicheli. Originally released in Italy under the title "Arriva Sabata!", the film was produced during the golden era of European westerns. Marcello Giombini composed the film's score. Cinematography was handled by Aldo Ricci. The film stars Anthony Steffen as Sabata / Garringo, Peter Lee Lawrence as Peter, and Eduardo Fajardo as Mangosta. Running 1 hour and 27 minutes, it is a well-paced entry in the genre.
Did You Know?
This is a 'mockbuster' title. It has absolutely no relation to the official Lee Van Cleef 'Sabata' movies. In Italy, it was released as 'Arriva Sabata!' just to confuse audiences.
